What should body jewelry be made of?

When Less Isn't More

Everyone likes to save money. However, one area on which you should never scrimp is the quality of your body jewelry. In other words, if you think you can buy a street stud or a cheap belly button ring from a flea market vendor and stick it in your piercing, think again!

High quality materials must be used during your piecing for one very obvious reason: You are creating a wound in your body and leaving a foreign material inside that wound. The last thing you want is a weak material that may collect or even hold onto bacteria. When looking for a discount nose ring or cheap belly button ring, ensure that only the price is cheap, not the materials.

Here is a list of acceptable body jewelry materials for new piercings. This is by no means a complete list, but it's a good start:

Surgical Stainless Steel: Type 316L(VM) ASTM: F-138, ISO: 5832-1
Titanium: 6A1-4V-EH Titanium
Niobium
Gold: 14K & 18K
Acrylic: PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate)
