October 3, 2008, Newsletter Issue #137: Ear piercing in American culture

Tip of the Week

Ear piercing in American culture has been in and out of vogue since the early 1920s. Pierced lobes were then traded for clip-on earrings for a period of time. Ear piercing was revived in the 1960s with home piercing, but didn't reach the mainstream again until the 1970s. Since, ear piercing has gained popularity with both males and females and is widely available at doctors' offices and jewelers, making fashion earrings popular for all ages.
